Since entering the UK electrical market in the mid 80's, Hager Ltd, then Hager Powertech Ltd, has not been slow to make its presence felt. Hager has worked hard and invested heavily to get its product mix right, but this is only part of the story behind its success. Its growth in the UK has required a close working relationship with contractors and suppliers and international capability is still an important consideration.
At the Hager injection moulding plant in Telford, the use of hydraulic clamping has significantly reduced set up times: from the one and a half to two hours required from end of mould to new batch set up with mechanical clamping, to just 15 to 20 minutes. With up to four tool changes a day on some of the machines, this has had a major impact on production levels.
Hilma Quick Die change hydraulic clamps from Roemheld are specified as standard throughout Hager's European manufacturing sites.
Paul Rooney, Engineering Services Manager for Hager, commented: "As we move our tooling throughout Europe, we need all elements to be interchangeable and meet our operating standards. When clamping in excess of 250 tonnes, we always specify Hilma-Roemheld hydraulic clamps."
Hager offers a comprehensive range of products for the control and distribution of electricity in domestic, commercial and light industrial applications.
The Telford plant has been using Hilma-Roemheld clamps for the past five years. When Hilma wedge clamps were fitted on two of the latest machines to be installed at this site, Roemheld's German manufacturing team worked directly with the machine builders, Ahrberg and Hamilton Demag. This entailed Roemheld building the units separately and supplying them to the machine builders for fitment. AC Hydraulics, a Roemheld UK distributor, then helped them with the UK installation.
The last few years have seen Hager double its turnover in the UK to its current level of £40m. In the electrical market, Hager believes that size does matter as increasingly large investment is needed to deliver not only product and service innovation, but also production efficiencies. Reliability is also key to optimising production potential.
